(1.) Refinement of the problem statement
The problem of carrying a disorganized utility backpack would be resolved, with a way to carry and organize lots of things with just one stylish accessory bag which is convenient and protects valuables.
Note : A 'bag' was the origin of the possible solutions; now it's not limited to a "bag" and I'd say "artifact" instead of bag now that I redefined the problem (blog post 2.1.)

(3.) Latent needs are marked with this (!)
I don't expect all needs to be met by the final design. Some user needs are uncommon. Let's see how it evolves in upcoming design processes - if some unexpected features become part of this artifact!
To understand the user’s needs for a "back-pack" - is how I interviewed, informally, over ten school students, six college students at the library, also three seniors at an outdoor nature event.
This range of customers creates some needs which clash with one another. Bold face are the primary needs. Clusters are in random order at this point; to arrange raw information.
In what way might I ...
1. make life convenient, easy and safer, to participate in a different events or travels, freed from worry about lugging things, to enjoy a spontaneous lifestyle out and about
2. carry things safely and easily, with convenience of keeping valuables safe, lug other things and save time from looking for things - to work, and for touring for the day or overnight
*3. carry and organize lots of things with convenience in just one stylish accessory bag with no worries of misplaced or damaged valuables
4. carry everything hands free - with as much stuff as carried in a day-pack plus a purse; having everything organized, and in divided sections (as in a bag) using a fashionable bag or accessory
5. carry just one accessory like a back-pack, with divided places for a school binder, garments, water, snacks, small valuables, more stuff, has handles, looks great
6. create an accessory that combines my back-pack and my waist-purse
I chose *3 - “In what way might I carry and organize lots of things with convenience in just one stylish accessory bag, with no worries of misplaced or damaged valuables" – - to be the TOP LEVEL statement of this problem.
I think it's impractical to enlarge the scope of the artifact without losing the focus of "day-use" purpose of the artifact. I think, this level also frees me from sticking to a 'bag' or 'back-pack' for the next several phases of this design course.
